What is Flexible Packaging?

Converting is simply changing something into a different form. In flexible packaging, it is the process of forming films, foils and resins into a multi-layer structure through lamination.

LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene) has higher tensile strength and better impact and puncture resistance than LDPE. It is flexible, elongates under stress, and can be used to make thinner films with better environmental stress cracking resistance.

MVTR (Moisture Vapor Transmission Rate) is the rate at which water vapor passes through a substance. OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate) is the rate at which oxygen passes through a substance.

Extrusion coating involves coating a molten web of synthetic resin onto a substrate at high temperatures, then cooling it. Adhesive coating applies a liquid or semi-liquid adhesive to a substrate to bond materials together.

Reverse printing is printing on the back side of a clear substrate with a reversed image. In flexible packaging, the print is buried between the outer substrate and the inner structure, offering scuff and chemical resistance.

Flexographic printing uses rubber or photopolymer plates with raised images. Rotogravure etches the image directly onto a cylinder with no plates required. Rotogravure can be identified by tooth-like marks around type when viewed through a loupe.
